First Lady of Rwanda awards young women for their scholastic achievements
The awards are part of a larger UNICEF/UN initiative to raise educational standards throughout the country. Girls' education is emerging as a national priority, thanks in part to the fact that Rwanda’s Constitution calls for at least 30 per cent of national lawmakers to be female. Today, Rwanda has the highest proportion of women legislators in the world: 49 percent in Parliament and 35 percent in the Senate. UNICEF, 2008
